I grew up on a sheep and cropping farm in Arthur River, approximately 200km from Perth. During high school, the subjects I most enjoyed were Economics and Politics and Law, and so I decided to study Commerce, majoring in Economics at Bond University on the Gold Coast. I went into my degree thinking that it would lead to a government advisory or banking career, yet after graduating, I saw an advertisement for a Graduate Grain Marketing role at Planfarm. Despite knowing very little about grain, I thought it would be a fantastic opportunity to apply my degree in an exciting way, and learn more about such a broad industry. My role at Planfarm involves providing support to the senior Grain Marketing advisors – including creating contracts for clients, transferring grain, setting price targets, as well as grain price monitoring and charting. This has given me a better understanding of how grain markets work, and is providing valuable experience before I take on my own clients in the future. I find my position to be very exciting, particularly negotiating prices with buyers, and making sure contracts are locked in on time when the market spikes. I also enjoy its varied nature, as there are many opportunities to travel out of the office to meet with farmers, where I can see first-hand the benefits our work provides - which is very rewarding.
